What to expect when applying for a dog from The Furever Project

Below you find some information on our adoption process. Should have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at any time.

⚠ To be considered for for adoption, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Live within 100 miles of the dog's foster family
  • Submit an adoption application

Once you submit an application

  1. Application Receipt Confirmation

You will receive email confirmation that the application has been received. The email will include points of contact for questions about the specific dog you are interested and for questions about the adoption process in general. If you haven’t received this email within 48 hours of submitting your application, please check your Spam folder.

  2. Background Check

We will start processing your application by first doing a background check.

  3. Reference Checks

If you do not currently have any pets, we will call your personal references.

  4. Phone Interview

You will then be contacted by one of The Furever Project’s Team to set up a phone interview. The phone interview is designed to make sure the dog you are interested in is a good fit for you or help identify possible good matches if you have not applied with a particular dog in mind. During the phone interview you can expect to discuss things like interest, lifestyle, pet ownership experience, routine for your new dog, etc.

  5. Introductions

If it seems from the phone interview that the dog you have applied for is a good fit, a meet and greet will be arranged. This meeting will usually take place at a park or other public area, and will include your current dog or dogs, if there are any. All members of the family must be present during this introduction.

  6. Home Visit

If the meet and greet is a success, the next step is a home visit. The home visit is designed to ensure the suitability of the home for a new dog, and to make sure that the resident dog and the Furever Project dog also get along on the resident’s dog territory. If there are concerns due to COVID-19 and there are no resident dogs or cats, the home visit may be conducted virtually.

  7. Finalize the Adoption

CONGRATULATIONS!! You’ve successfully completed all the steps, and now you are ready to finalize the adoption. Simply electronically sign the adoption contract, submit the application fee (structured based on the dog’s age and outlined below) and set a pick-up date with your new furry family member’s foster family.

ⓘ Other things to know about TFP's adoption process

  • We do not adopt on a first-come, first-served basis; we match a dog with an approved adopter who can provide the best home for that dog based on his/her temperament and needs.
  • Puppies have to be altered, fully vaccinated, and at least 12 weeks of age before they can go to their adoptive homes.
  • Microchips will remain registered to TFP, with the adopter's name being added as a second contact.
